Two years ago, much of the delight of people, Sonos made an announcement that it will soon be providing voice assistant technology in its products. It promised Google Assistant integration with Sonos speakers. While the Amazon Alexa integration was rolled out, customers were still excitedly waiting for the Google Assistant integration.
google assistant will soon be coming to sonos
Sonos and Google have partnered to make Assistant compatible with Sonos Speakers. In the coming time, users will be able to say “Hey Google” to Sonos speakers.
The older variant was in a rather restricted beta, that is available on order for a couple of thousand individuals, and it came with some bugs. These bugs will get fixed in the beta, and those who wish to know when the beta shall expire and Sonos will start shipping Google on Sonos Beam and Sonos One, they are unwilling to give a specific date.
But it definitely works. One can perform all sorts of usual Google things such as asking queries, setting alarms, starting video playback on Chromecasts, and a lot more. People can tell Assistant to play song tracks, and they won’t even have to tell in which room, as the virtual assistant will be aware that it present on the Sonos speaker. Users who own Sonos Beam can utilize it for controlling the television.
It is not completely flawless
But, this fails to function as smoothly as you might have wanted it to. Sonos allows you to control its device via the application and digital assistant. However, when one starts to get deep into the functionalities, it may get complex.
While Google and Sonos are not to be blamed for these problems, as a couple of these issues are present with Alexa as well.
All things aside, the major flaw that people should know is that they will be unable to keep both Google, as well as Alexa, activated and listening on a single Sonos speaker concurrently.
When the companies were asked about this restriction, they didn’t give direct answers. Google said that it is because of user experience. For instance, when an alarm sounds on the speaker, then the device owner might not know which digital assistant triggered the alarm.
An added limitation is that users can just tell the Assistant to play songs from streaming services that are natively supported by it. Apple Music is not a part of it. The users can, however, utilize Google for basic transportation controls and for identifying songs on different platforms.
Final words
The launch date is still unknown. The company has been running tests for Google Assistant in private beta for quite a while. As per the company, they will be rolling out this private beta to some individuals towards the end of this month. We are still to see how good and advanced this integration will be, it is something that only time can tell.
