There is evidence from multiple trials that #AtrialFibrillation (AF) is associated with #cognitive impairment, cognitive decline and #dementia. This is true for vascular dementia as well as #AlzheimersDisease, with both types of dementia sharing important #cardiovascular risk factors. Postulated mechanisms for the development of cognitive decline and dementia in patients with AF are multifactorial and include #IschaemicStroke, silent stroke secondary to cerebral microinfarcts, cerebral haemorrhage and chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. Based on several observational studies, it can be expected that anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists as well as direct oral anticoagulants may reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in patients with AF.
